About Me

My existence was a crime from when I was born, until 1994 when South Africa held its first democratic elections. It didn’t affect me much, except that I was expelled from my first preschool when they found out that I was mixed race. My father told me that the school had burned down.

My highest grades were in art, mathematics, and English, but I was more interested in video games and board games, a pastime I enjoyed playing with my mother in the living room in the evenings. “Just one more round”, we would say, staying up past my bedtime for just one more go at Battle Tanks on the Nintendo. I was a pleasant child and was voted to be house captain by my peers. There were three school houses, Otters, Dolphins, and Seals and I was voted to captain the Seals house. This would turn out to be rather ironic in high school. Outside of school I spent my time surfing, skateboarding, and hanging out with friends and I was also a presenter on a national kid’s TV program called Craze-e. I participated in extra-mural activities such as Judo, Kickboxing, Chess Club, and Hip-hop dance…because hip-hop dance was all the rage in the 90’s.

Although I had chosen my subjects well enough and was excelling in art and design classes, I had also chosen dance as a subject because of the lingering hip-hop craze from the 90’s. This turned out to be a mistake, as I was one of two males in the class expected to do ballet and modern dance alongside all the more attractive girls in the grade. It was a bit humiliating, but d Graeme and I were able to drop the subject 3 years later in grade 11. Dancing ended up helping me with my skateboarding and surfing, so things were looking up as the term ended.
